Even the early Macs were designed with a display resolution of 72dpi, their dot matrix ImageWriter printer at 144dpi, and their LaserWriter printer at 288dpi – and most everything was vector based type with a few exceptions for fonts (such as Chicago) intended for display only, which were raster fonts for the simple reason of conserving processing power.
